Ong Lai Paceri (Pineapple in Sweet & Spicy Sauce)

Tested Recipe Adapted from Plilip Yoong’s Nyonya Deli

Ong Lai Paceri (Pineapple in Sweet & Spicy Sauce)


600g cleaned pineapple, cut into 1 ½ cm half rounds

4 tbsp oil

4 star anise


A (pounded):

15 dried chillies

4 red chillies

180g shallots

1 ½ tsp belacan powder

15g buah keras


2 tsp turmeric powder

1 tbsp ketumbar powder

200ml coconut milk

500ml water


2 ½ tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

Preparation Instructions:

  1. Heat up 4 tbsp oil, saute star anise till fragrant. Add in spices A and fry at low heat till aromatic. Add B and stir-fry for 2 minutes. Pour in half of coconut milk and cook till the oil breaks onto the surface.
  2. Pour in water and bring to boil. Put in pineapple, seasoning and simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Add in the remaining coconut milk and bring to boil for 1 minute. Dish up, serve hot with rice.
